Shakespeare usually set his plays in Italy, because of its association with highly sophisticated people. Strangely, he never left England, as far as biographers have been able to tell.

It seemed that in his time, people immediately found Italy a more interesting setting than England, and wanted to read the plays more. He also had more freedom to criticize rulers that weren’t his own country.
